Get on the waiting list for 2023
This class focuses on learning what is needed to know when backpacking in the wilderness in the beautiful Colorado summer.
What to Expect:
We want this to be a fun learning experience that you will enjoy.
We will meet at Spirit Forest Friday night and camp out. We will have a safety overview and some training that needs to be done before we hit the trail.
After orientation, we will go over the items in our backpacks then quickly setup our camp and talk about picking the perfect camping site.
We will be heading out on the trail after a quick breakfast at camp and some fire* lessons. We will hike with our backpacks for about 5-7 miles to our wilderness campsite. We should arrive at the campsite mid day which gives us plenty of time to go over more safety training.
This is a basic class, however you will be required to carry up to a 40lb pack for up to 7-14 miles. Once we are committed on the trail, we are not turning around unless for medical reasons. Please be sure you are up for the task and have trained by going on long walks carrying weight twice a week for a month before this adventure.
*If there is a fire ban, you are welcome to come to Spirit Forest once the ban has been lifted.
(Skills You Will Learn: What to Pack in a Backpack, How to Plan, Basics on Map/Compass Reading, Obtaining Safe Drinking Water, Fire Building*, 3 Basic Knots all Hikers Should Know, Knife Safety, Shelter Building, How much food to pack, How to Cook food in the Wilderness, How to pack a backpack, Bear Safety)
*If there is a fire ban we will not be able to build a fire.
